The Man With The Power

The Boston Globe profiles Doug Rubin, the veteran Democrat political consultant who is Gov. Patrick's new chief of staff.

Rubin, a 39-year-old political consultant who won public accolades for the Patrick campaign, has labored quietly for years honing messages, calming candidates, and keeping his own cool.

"For many people, the campaign becomes about them or their personality," said state Representative Peter J. Koutoujian, a Waltham Democrat who defeated an incumbent in 1996 with Rubin's help. "He has always tried to avoid that."

A 1990 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Rubin started his career working in former US representative Joseph Kennedy's office, then went to work for state Senator Dianne Wilkerson, both on her first campaign in 1992 and in her legislative office. He also aided the 1992 presidential campaign in Massachusetts and in California, and spent a few weeks on grass-roots organizing with a political campaign in Peru.
