Representatives on Beacon Hill have effectively thumbed their noses at Governor Deval Patrick as they prepare to file a budget without any new taxes, reversing many of Patrick's key decisions.
Speaker Sal DiMasi (D-Boston) said the proposed budget will erase many of the initiatives launched by Patrick in February. Most notably, it will dismantle his funding plan for more local cops and set aside plans for $300 million in business taxes.“There will be no new taxes,” said DiMasi, who also trumpeted a legislative effort to boost Patrick’s $200 million in proposed aid to cities and towns by $20 million. “Many more communities benefited from our plan than in the governor’s plan.”
The House budget is expected to include deep spending cuts - in some cases deeper than Patrick’s plan - and will also call for a large appropriation from the state’s rainy day fund to help balance a $1.2 billion deficit.
If Deval Patrick can't get an 87% liberal legislature on his side, that's just pathetic.
