The latest update from Patrick Central:
Gov. Deval Patrick and top lawmakers say they’ll push the repeal of a 1913 law that bans out-of-state gay couples from marrying in Massachusetts - a move that could open the state to a wave of same-sex marriage applicants from across the country.
Patrick last night decried the “smelly origins” of the 1913 law, which gay marriage activists say was aimed at preventing out-of-state interracial marriages.
“It has questionable legislative history, and I think it’s outdated,” Patrick said. “If it passes the Legislature and comes to my desk, I will sign that bill.”
That deafening silence you hear is actually the response from Boston's black clergymen, who condemned same-sex marriage in 2004--but turned right around and endorsed Patrick on racial-solidarity grounds in 2006. Real smart, guys!
