A Sympathy Ploy?

Gov. Patrick claims that his wife is being treated for depression; as a result, he will cut back his schedule.

The governor ‘‘will work a flexible schedule for the next few weeks in order to spend more time with her and his family,’’ according to a statement.

Aides to Patrick declined to say whether Diane Patrick had been hospitalized, or had suffered from depression or exhaustion in the past.

‘‘The family asks for the prayers and understanding of the public,’’ the statement read. ‘‘We also ask respect for the family’s privacy at this difficult time.’’

A partner at the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray, Diane Patrick, 55, said when her husband was elected last November that she intended to be more prominent publicly than previous gubernatorial spouses. But she acknowledged she was unsure how to balance the new demands with her legal career.

This is a new low for Deval Patrick Watch. To call an illness a "sympathy ploy" with no evidence-sick.

You silly Deval Watch does not need to include the private business of his wife. And what does "claims" mean? You have to ask yourself if your political nonsense helps the people of Massachusetts. If you cannot answer yes, then it hurts the people of Massachusetts.

Don't you think you should cut the Governor some slack? A sympathy ploy? Give me a break. I didn't vote for the guy but at least show some compassion. No one deserves to suffer from depression. I'm sure you would be upset if it were a conservative governor were accused of pulling a stunt. Let's stick to the issues and in the meantime wish the best for Mrs. Patrick.

Patrick’s many early blunders are his own responsibility, but they don’t justify doubting every statement by the Patrick administration. The title you chose for this post is cruel and uncalled for, DR.

A blunderer clueless about how his own personal decisions can impact his leadership, yes, but Patrick is probably not a compulsive liar.

Are you perhaps mistaking him for Bill Clinton?

why is she so exhausted? doesn't she have a $70K a year assistant?

Posted by: Voodoo Daddy at March 11, 2007 05:05 PM

Let's all wish Mrs. Patrick well, and give Gov. Patrick lee-way to care for her.

That said - Amy Gorin should be placed on unpaid leave, as Mrs. Patrick will not have any committments to schedule for the immediate future.

Anyone wanna place a bet on whether Deval will appear at the Southie St. Patrick's Day Breakfast?

Or, will he conveniently delegate that to Murray, as well?

Has there ever been a governor no-show at the breakfast?

I hope the 1st lady is going to be OK and gets the help she needs asap.

This is another example of why Deval as a slick talking lawyer:

"Patrick said he would work a more flexible schedule to spend more time with his wife, Diane, who is suffering from exhaustion and depression."

A more flexible schedule? Either he is going to spend more time with his wife, and less time at work, or not. A more accurate word for this situation is probably "he would work a lighter schedule to spend more time with his wife..."

Depression is a devastating illness. I'm a proud Republican, but this blog is getting ridiculous.

Posted by: GOPizzle at March 12, 2007 10:10 AM

Depression can be bad news. I know. I have been under treatment for it for 12 years. In that time frame, I lost my job (not related to depression), became self employed, running my own company. My wife worked, I was on the road 20-25 times a year. We put two kids thru college, as well. I was not then, nor am I now, independently wealth.

My point: I have symphathy for Mrs Patrick. But as far as I am concerned, her hubby is now on welfare. No one was there for my family, nor did I want anyone...pride...I have taken no time off, nor went to a reduced work schedule. I continued therapy, and fought my thru it. The taxpayers of the Peoples Democratic Republic spent nothing on me or my family, and that is as it should be.

Deval is the now the official welfare king of our state

Using the person with their career in shambles enters rehav themself. In this case its his wife, a very clever trick indeed.

Absolutely - the first thing that came to my mind when I heard ~ probably exhausted from watching Deval embarass himself and lie to his supporters over and over. I think if she suffered from depression, maybe she would have come forward during the campaign, as Mitt's wife did about her MS.
THis just gives him a "human shield" of his own to hide behind....

Many of you have no idea how tormenting depression can be. And for the person who has been under treatment, you should depression affects each person individually. Just because you were strong enough to work, doesn't mean everyone else has the same strength. Kudos to you, but there are many with this illness who cannot even function.

everything in politics is timed. this announcement, like it or not, has very suspicious timing. hands down. no contest.

they could have kept this under wraps if they wanted...easily...and perhaps it has been for months.

Isasmuch as there are people out there that will say "you shouldn't say such things because you don't know what is going on" is exactly yeah someone needs to question it. For every person who says "you gotta cut him some slack" you further prove the point that it could very be a ploy.

For crying out loud, Republicans can't so much as get a hangnail without some democrat suggesting it's politically motivated.

This is politics people, get over it. If you can't take the heat and take a few punches, there's the door. Deval thought he could get away with a lot of stuff, and he was wrong. Perhaps if he wasn't such a sneaky guy the past 3 months, there wouldn't be any reason to be suspicious, but he has given us cause to question him.

Politics is about taking the slings and arrows for things regular people don't get slings and arrows for.

we regular people can go get a haircut without notice, but someone in politics, like a governor, or president, it's not just a haircut (remember clinton's $200 haircut?).

I would question what the hell mrs. patrick has to be despressed about...i thought being first lady of Massachusetts was a positive development for their family.

Maybe she figured out how much taxes are going up...

Maybe her $72,000.00/year aide can give a great massage? I know yoga helps with the blues and the scent of lavender is really uplifting.

I mean seriously, folks. I've lived with depression and anxiety for more than half of my 40-some-odd years. I'm deeply suspicious that any working man, let alone an embattled Governor of the Commonwealth, would take time off to spend with family because his spouse was "being treated for exhaustion and depression". This is everyday for millions of us and we don't have the luxury of having our spouses take flex time from work to reconnect with us. There is more to this story than is being told. Why are people too afraid to criticize this story? While I do have sympathy for Diane Patrick and anyone who suffers from anxiety or depression, I'm deeply suspicious as to why this private matter was released to the public in the manner that it was. There has to be much more of an explanation to this than the usual "we're taking time off for a family mental health break". It just doesn't cut it for me.

Didn't Ann Romney have Multiple Sclerosis while Mitt was in office and she did fine...without a personal 70k/yr scheduler? I honestly hope the first lady of Mass will regain her composure but if she can't stomache a vocal minority in a state full of libs, then she better not visit Utah or the conservative south anytime soon. As for Deval, if he can't keep his house in order, how can he manage Massachusetts?

Posted by: BarkTwiggs at March 13, 2007 03:19 AM

What does the Queen have to be depressed about?

She's got a sprawling mansion in the Berkshires
A sweet pad in Milton
A cushy, affirmative action job at Ropes/Gray
A $72,000/year social secretary (not to mention her law firm staff)
She's got access to her husband's chauffer driven Caddie & helicopter
She can go shopping for $12K drapes on the taxpayer's dime
Etc, Etc.

Shesh. now I'm depressed.

Posted by: whatcoupe at March 13, 2007 10:10 AM

whatcoupe...

my thoughts EXACTLY.

us regular folk have a lot more to be depressed and ehausted about, and we don't a $72,000 secretary, and i venture to say that most of us don't make $72,000 on our own.

yeah, it's a tough life. She should be pretty darn psyched that she and Deval are such role models for black kids today who didn't require a record deal with Death Row Records or a contract for tens of millions of dollars in the NBA.

It seems to me that many people are too quickly diagnosed with depression. By gosh, people of much less means go through life very happy--frankly, it pisses me off that someone like Mrs. Patrick can prance around "i'm depressed, I'm exhausted" when she doesn't understand what it is like to really struggle to make ends meet--at least, not as the wife of a governor.

Boo-hoo. cry me a river. Ask all the black kids in Roxbury and Dorchester and Southie if they are depressed...

Posted by: Voodoo Daddy at March 13, 2007 12:53 PM

Why this "depression" thing is a farse: It is so damned public. If you are ill, or your wife is ill is there really a need to blast ir over the intercom at work?

How is it that his wife could not take some time off and Deval could quietly rearrange his schedule.

In other words, why does the whole world now know about this?

rookie mistakes?,inappropriate business call's?, dropping approval ratings? state economy slumping? dukakis comparisons...so ya wanted to be da gov, huh?
