The reaction from Deval's friends in the blogosphere has been quite interesting... The reaction has ranged from blaming the media for focusing on Deval's extravagance with our tax dollars (though they didn't use those words) to commending Deval for admitting he made a mistake.
I am not moved by Deval's non-apologetic admission of guilt, which was done solely to save some political face. The fact is, this story is just the tip of the iceberg, and if Deval's supporters can't see it, then the biggest lesson we can learn from these incidents is that no matter how bad Deval Patrick blunders, his "Together We Can" crew will give him a pass every time.
Deval Patrick was the one who came into office claiming our state was in a bad financial situation. Yet, the independently wealthy Deval didn't forgo his salary like Mitt Romney and Kerry Healey did when they took office. Instead, he upgraded his car, started accumulating frequent flier miles on a state police helicopter, got his wife an unnecessary chief of staff, and decided to redecorate his office with expensive furnishings at our expense.
Deval Patrick has proven himself to be a liberal's liberal and a Democrat's Democrat. He sees our tax dollars as play money that can be thrown at anything to help him live a life of luxury.
If anything Deval Patrick voters should be the most outraged of anyone. But no. Instead, they blame the media and/or commend Deval for "owning up" to a mistake he never would have owned up to had it not been for the Boston Herald and anywhere else that reported on it.
Sadly, we're only in the first weeks of his governorship... We still got the better part of four years for Deval Patrick to waste our money on personal luxuries for himself and his wife.
