Steppin' to The Bad Side

In a profoundly repugnant development, many members of the Bay State's African-American clergy have decided to abandon their Christian teachings on same-sex marriage in order to worship gay-marriage supporter Deval Patrick as a false idol.

The first one in line to kiss Patrick's behind is a fellow by the name of Bishop Gilbert Thompson, who two years ago condemned Patrick for his pro-"marriage equality" stance. Apparently, Thompson felt justified in criticizing Patrick when it didn't seem likely that Patrick would even win the Democrat primary, much less the Corner Office. Now that Patrick is Governor, however, Thompson would rather switch than fight.

In a statement of pure preacherman phoniness, Thompson--the man who originally did not want Patrick to become governor--now says that Patrick is "a powerful leader," and "the most qualified man for the job." Really.

As for the other offering-plate pirates, their support for Patrick can only be described as pure opportunism. These guys have been denouncing same-sex marriage for years in their churches and in front of media microphones. However, since they know many members of their respective congregations admire the "Together We Can" man, they just can't wait to join his fan club.

Remember that old liberal bumper sticker, "Lord, save me from your followers"? Looking at the black clergy's rush to glorify Patrick, I would advise non-liberal Bay Staters to buy that sticker and put it on their cars. Right next to "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Muffy."

UPDATE: More from the Boston Globe.
